Chapter 10

Sarah sat on the stone bench, staring unseeing at the fountain as she tried to wrap her mind around Remy’s confessions. She didn’t know which one had rocked her the hardest, his intention to go into Sanctuary or his desire for her.

The thought of anyone voluntarily entombing themselves for eternity was abhorrent to her. Despite his insistence that it was a place of peace, she did not truly believe it. She had always possessed a fierce drive for knowledge. She wanted to learn everything she could about the universe. Immortality had been a boon she could not be more thankful for and the idea of giving it up was madness.

But when he had confessed that all he wanted was peace, the longing in his voice had been undeniable. It didn’t matter what she thought of Sanctuary, this was about him and he believed that he could find the quiet he sought there. The male was torn up and at his last wit’s end and she had clearly seen that haunting darkness from before back in his eyes.

It was that look that had stalled any more protests before they left her lips. Who was she to tell Remy what he should want or do? They had only known each other a few days and she had no special insight or pull over him. If he wanted to go into Sanctuary, that was his choice to make and she had no right to argue with him about it.

And so she had accepted it and somehow that had led to his other confession, which had floored her even more than his determination to go into Sanctuary. It wasn’t that she was surprised that he wanted her, she had already known that, but the depth of that desire was altogether new.

I’m going to want to stay there forever.

Forever was not a word that their kind threw around as carelessly as humans did. When you were mortal words like forever and eternity were abstract concepts because they didn’t truly exist. If you were lucky, forever lasted maybe a hundred years and then it was over. For immortals, forever could literally be until the end of time itself.

She didn’t think Remy knew, at least consciously, what he had said. The male’s mind was all over the place, his emotions all over the map and it would be easy for his subconscious to come through in a slip of the tongue and a damning confession.

For all his warnings, he wanted her. Not just physically either. He wanted her to reach out to him emotionally. If he truly wanted her to stay away from him, he wouldn’t have come to stand with her during the ceremony and he certainly wouldn’t have told her how much power she had over him.

Because that was what his confession had told her. He didn’t truly want to go into Sanctuary, it was just that he believed it was what he should do. And it appeared that she was the only one with the power to change his mind.
